READING WONDERS

This semester, Palmerium is offering several levels of Reading Wonders for students from 7 to 14 years old. This class is perfect for students who want to improve their reading and writing skills for academic success.  It is highly recommended for foreign students who plan to take ELA courses at home or abroad.

LITERARY STUDIES

Our Literary Studies classes are for students who are reading above their grade level and have developed a  regular habit of reading outside of class. The class also includes instruction in academic essay writing to include five-paragraph and personal narrative essay writing.

TEST PREP

These classes include skills and strategies for TOEFL iBT, IELTS, and the SAT(verbal) tests.  The classes are designed for students who plan to study in universities abroad or just enjoy the challenge of high-stakes testing.

READING WONDERS©

English Language Arts class for ESL, Bilingual and Native-speaking English students. 

Students will read a variety of high interest texts from the fiction and non-fiction genres. Class instruction will focus on the development of reading comprehension and writing skills to include: background-building activities, reading strategies, and word-building skills. Writing instruction focuses on composition for academic and creating writing tasks.

LITERARY STUDIES

Full-length novel reading and academic writing

Fostering an interest and love for reading is vital to developing reading comprehension and fluency. Every five classes, students will complete one full length novel to include vocabulary building, analysis of key textual features and literary elements. For each book, students will also complete two essays to include academic and personal narrative essay forms.

AMERICAN SHORT STORIES

Friday - 7:30pm to 9:00pm (China)

As a genre, short stories are ideal for providing intensive reading for development of reading comprehension and broadening a student’s world view. This class will use the short story format to conduct advanced studies in literary elements and themes used in fiction. Students will complete one short story weekly to include background building, and vocabulary development activities. Associated activities, which will include detailed definitions of plot, character, setting and theme, will be used to conduct independent and group analysis of each story through writing and group discussion.

TEST PREP

TOEFL, IELTS, SAT(verbal)

TOEFL©  IBT

Sunday

6:30pm to 8:00pm (China time)

This class will focus on the speaking, reading, listening and writing  sections of the TOEFL© iBT test with a special emphasis on speaking and writing. Passages will include reading and audio passages about personal tastes and preferences, life on university campus, university coursework, and academic lectures. Students will be taught to respond in writing and speaking to different question types using the three main test criteria – delivery, language use and topic development. A personalized plan for future improvement will also be provided for each section of the course.

Weeks 11 - 15 Integrated tasks (speaking and writing)
